Nijmegen, treaties of, 1678–9. Though England was not directly involved in the protracted Nijmegen negotiations, since the third Anglo-Dutch war (1672–4) had been wound up by the treaty of Westminster, her interests were much at stake. Louis XIV had clearly failed in his original intention of crushing the Dutch, yet he was still able to make significant territorial gains, including fifteen frontier towns and Franche-Comté. It was becoming obvious that France had replaced Spain as Europe's overmighty power and the shape of the coalition to restrain Louis 1688–1714 began to appear.
