Gravelines, battle of
Gravelines, battle of, 1558. In August 1557 the Spaniards gained a major victory over the French at Saint-Quentin. A French counter-stroke in January 1558 gained them Calais at the expense of the English. In July 1558 the Spaniards gained another victory at Gravelines, assisted by an English naval force, sent by Mary to help her husband Philip of Spain. The French were obliged to make peace in 1559 at Cateau-Cambrésis. But they did not restore Calais.
