Corrichie, battle of, 1562. When Mary, queen of Scots, returned from France as a widow in 1561, great influence was wielded by her half-brother Lord James Stuart, illegitimate son of James V. He pursued a pro-English and pro-protestant policy. Early in 1562 he was made earl of Moray, which was also claimed by the 4th earl of Huntly, a leader of the catholics. Huntly was forced into rebellion and then defeated and captured by Lord James on 28 October at Corrichie, west of Aberdeen. Huntly died that night, being ‘gross, corpulent, short of breath’.
