NORTHFIELD BANK ROBBERY

NORTHFIELD BANK ROBBERY. After some days of preliminary scouting, eight men headed by Thomas ("Cole") Younger, a former Confederate guerrilla, rode into Northfield, Minnesota, about noon on 7 September 1876. While three men attempted to hold up the First National Bank, killing teller Joseph Heywood, the remainder engaged townspeople in a wild gun battle, during which two bandits were killed and a bystander was mortally wounded. On 21 September, a posse surrounded four of the gang near Madelia; two men, probably Frank and Jesse James, had escaped. After sharp gunfire in which one bandit was killed, the three Younger brothers, badly wounded, surrendered.
