Ruth, ‘Babe’
Ruth, ‘Babe’ ( George Herman) (1895–1948) US baseball player. Ruth held the career home-run record (714) until surpassed (1974) by Hank Aaron. His record of 60 home runs in one season was not beaten until the season was extended from 154 to 162 games. He played for the Boston Red Sox (1914–19), New York Yankees (1920–34), and Boston Braves (1935). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
