Henley Royal Regatta

Henley Royal Regatta the oldest rowing regatta in Europe, inaugurated in 1839 at Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, as a result of the interest aroused locally by the first Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, which took place at Henley in 1829. The regatta is held annually in the first week in July.

Henley Royal Regatta was established in 1839 and from 1851, under the patronage of Prince Albert, took the prefix Royal. It is held on the Thames with races over 1 mile 550 yards. The two chief events are the Grand Challenge Cup (1839) and the Diamond Challenge Sculls (1844). The four-day event is held in the first week in July.
