Grass, Günter Wilhelm
Grass, Günter Wilhelm (1927– ) German novelist, poet and dramatist. He combined evocative description with historical documentation in a mannerist style. He used powerful techniques to grotesque comic effect in The Tin Drum (1959) and Cat and Mouse (1961), and satirized the Nazi era in Dog Years (1963). Later works include The Flounder (1977) and The Rat (1986). He received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1999.
