Born November 10, 1955, in Stuttgart, West Germany (now Germany); son of Hans Emmerich (owner of a garden equipment manufacturing company); brother of Ute Emmerich (a producer, casting director, and executive). Education: Studied production design at Munich Film and Television School, 1977–81.
