DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM

Salve Regina University's Office of Graduate Extension Study provides an alternative to traditional classroom learning by acknowledging the needs of students whose personal and professional circumstances make regular on-campus study difficult. Salve Regina University has been providing master's programs by extension for the past twenty years. Salve offers an M.B.A., an M.A. in international relations, an M.S. in management, and an M.A. in humanities, plus several professional certificates completely online. The program of study completed online is the same as that completed by on-campus students.

DELIVERY MEDIA

All courses are accessed through the World Wide Web. Once students register for a course, they are notified of their username and password. Online courses are offered in two formats: self-paced and interactive.

Online self-paced courses are usually available at the time of registration. The student has four months to complete each course. The course assignments are given as modules. At the end of each module, students send their completed assignments via e-mail to the GES office.

Online interactive courses have specific start and end dates. In these courses, students interact with other students and have the ability to participate in discussions with faculty members. Communication is asynchronous; there is no requirement for members of the class to be online at the same time. This interactive environment enriches course content, provides opportunity for discussion, and encourages the exchange of ideas.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Four distance learning master's degree programs are offered in business administration, humanities, international relations, and management.

The Master of Business Administration program is designed to prepare graduates to successfully lead and manage organizations in a constantly changing environment. In both the for-profit and not-for-profit environments, today's executive is faced with myriad concerns ranging from ethical and human rights issues to globalization and environmental protection. The Salve Regina University Master of Business Administration curriculum provides the technical knowledge and skills to appreciate and address these and other critical contemporary issues. The program is directed toward developing leaders with a focus on ethics, organizational behavior, finance, economics, accounting, and strategic management. Social purpose and workplace humanization are underlying program values aligned with the University's mission. This degree program is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).

Salve Regina is an independent, coeducational institution of higher learning that confers degrees in the arts and sciences. It teaches in the tradition of the Catholic Church and according to the Mission of the Sisters of Mercy, who continue as its sponsors. Salve Regina's Charter was amended in June 1991 to change its name to Salve Regina University.

The University serves approximately 2,300 men and women from many states and other countries. Alumni number more than 14,000. Its 65-acre oceanfront campus in Newport's Ochre Point historic district includes thirty-nine new and adapted buildings.

The University, through teaching and research, prepares men and women for responsible lives by imparting and expanding knowledge, developing skills, and cultivating enduring values. Through liberal arts and professional programs, students develop their abilities for thinking clearly and creatively, enhance their capacity for sound judgment, and prepare for the challenge of learning throughout their lives.

The graduate programs of Salve Regina University have two broad goals: to help the individual who enrolls to realize his or her own full potential and to prepare this individual for helping others do the same.

The curriculum and content of the international relations program is a reflection of the University's mission regarding justice and the increasing need to envision international political behavior in its framework. In its own capacity and within the University's mission, the international relations program promotes international and world politics. The program prepares graduates to be constructively critical of their immediate and broader political environment, whether in their place of work (government, education, the private sector, the media, or nongovernmental organizations) or simply as citizens of both their country and the world. The program's objective is to reinforce the vision of its graduates to view fellow human beings not only as representatives of national and social compartments but also as overlapping circles in a world community. In practical terms, this translates into global solidarity and the elimination of injustice everywhere. Graduates are able to produce creative and pragmatic solutions to problems and dilemmas confronting the world. The program accomplishes its objective by exposing the candidates in a systematic and comprehensive way to the realities of the political environment through a core of courses covering political thought, international relations, and comparative politics.

The Master of Arts in Humanities is an interdisciplinary program that seeks to foster a broad understanding of the qualitative aspects of life and culture through a study of disciplines such as history, literature, philosophy, and religion. The course of study is intended for individuals who want to broaden their intellectual and cultural horizons. It also serves as excellent preparation for the Ph.D. degree in the humanities.

The Master of Science program in management offers a solid theoretical and practical management foundation and integrates information systems into the management role.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

The certificate program in management is for students who already have a bachelor's degree and includes 15 hours of graduate credit. It offers opportunities for those who desire a graduate education without formal pursuit of a master's degree.

CREDIT OPTIONS

The master's degree programs are all twelve courses (36 credits). Students have up to five years to complete all of the requirements for the degree; however, at a rate of four courses per year, students are generally able to complete the degree in three years. Normally, only 40 percent of the total program credits are eligible to transfer into the graduate programs at Salve Regina University. The University, however, does recognize the unique situation of military members who are not located in one area long enough to obtain a graduate degree in the traditional manner. Accordingly, the University accepts up to 18 credits earned at military schools, colleges, or universities in accordance with the recommendations made by the American Council of Education (ACE) and with the University transfer policy regarding academic performance.

FACULTY

The faculty members are a valued resource; many teach full-time on campus and others are adjunct faculty members who are successful professionals within their field. They come from leading doctoral, M.B.A., and law programs and represent a wide variety of backgrounds. Their superior teaching skills, academic training and research, and knowledge of practical application bring a wealth of experience to the curriculum.

ADMISSION

Men and women with bachelor's degrees from accredited institutions of higher learning who are considered to have the ability to pursue graduate study and show a desire for personal development are admitted following a careful evaluation of their credentials, without regard to age, race, sex, creed, national or ethnic origin, or handicap.

TUITION AND FEES

Tuition is $340 per credit hour for all Extension Study courses. All courses are 3 credit hours. Fees include application ($50), incomplete/delay of grade ($150), master's degree graduation ($175), and transcript ($5).

FINANCIAL AID

Salve Regina University assists students in applying for loans through the Federal Family Educational Loan Programs, particularly the Federal Stafford Student Loans. These loans are available to all students and may be used to fund education at the University provided the student maintains continuous quantitative and qualitative progress. Benefit plans for veterans and active-duty service persons and employers' tuition-reimbursement plans are welcome.

APPLYING

The following must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office: an application form, a nonrefundable application fee, official transcripts from all accredited degree-granting institutions attended, two letters of recommendation, standardized test scores no more than five years old (GRE, MAT, GMAT, or LSAT), a personal statement of intent of study, and a nonrefundable commitment deposit upon acceptance. The TOEFL and official transcript evaluations are required of international students. A graduate extension study catalog with application may be requested from the Graduate Admissions Office.
