Loudon's hollow wall
Loudon's hollow wall. Brick wall of two leaves each of Flemish bond (see brick), the stretchers of which have a gap between them two inches (5.08 cm) apart, so the headers require a two-inch closer brick to make up the full width of the wall. A variant was to lay the headers without the closers, or to lay them so that they were only one inch back from each face, thus providing excellent keys for plaster or stucco rendering. The hollow could be heated for horticultural purposes. Loudon also invented variations on other types of hollow wall, including improvements to Dearn's and Silverlock's bonds.
