Sidelights

Award-winning British artist Caroline Jayne Church incorporates bright colors, pleasing shapes, and texture in the majority of her illustrations for children's books. Church's illustration work is inspired by American folk art, which influences the paper cut outs the artist uses to form her collage images. In addition to her work both illustrating and writing children's books, Church has also created a popular line of greeting cards, prints and posters.

Church's self-illustrated One Smart Goose showcases her talent for integrating her paper collage art within an engaging story. The book recounts the tale of a white goose who is outcast by his fellow flock members because of the muddy condition of his feathers. The tidy and well-groomed geese around him eventually come to realize that being unkempt has its benefits: their dirty friend is able to camouflage himself from the hungry wolf who menaces the flock during the summer night. During the winter the clever but dingy goose finally takes a bath, thereby blending with the winter snow to conceal himself from the wolf, but when he suggests to his now-dirty flockmates that they do the same, the silly geese refuse to listen. Ultimately, the wise white goose must use his wits to save his empty-headed friends from the stealthy predator. Booklist reviewer Carolyn Phelan labeled Church's story "clever," and went on to remark that the child-friendly "illustrations are the book's most striking feature." Rachel G. Payne noted in her School Library Journal review that Church's "simple, playful text is full of fun sound effects and repeated phrases," while her textured collages "give the images depth." A Publishers Weekly critic dubbed One Smart Goose an "uplifting outing" that applauds individuality and cleverness.
