antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (Hughes syndrome) (anti-fos-foh-lip-id) n. an autoimmune disease in which the presence of antibodies against phospholipid is associated with a tendency to arterial or venous thrombosis and – in women of childbearing age – recurrent (three or more) miscarriages. Treatment is by low-dose aspirin or heparin.
