See index for CA sketch: Born October 17, 1931, in Fort Worth, TX; died of cancer, November 23, 2007, in East Amwell, NJ. Librarian, library director, educator, and editor. Woodward began his career as a professor of English before leaving the world of literature for the world of books. He became the library director at the Henry E. Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, in 1972, and retired there as a senior researcher and scholar in 1996. Woodward devoted himself to upgrading both the library's collections and the space in which they are housed and displayed. Under his leadership the library's holdings grew to some 700,000 books and millions of manuscripts. Woodward's special interests, aside from antiquarian books in general, were modern literature and the history of science. One of his achievements in the latter field was his acquisition of the papers of astronomer Edwin P. Hubble. In the area of modern literature, he was able to procure or assist in the acquisition of the papers of esteemed authors such as Conrad Aiken, Kingsley Amis, and Wallace Stevens. As a scholar of English literature, Woodward edited The Poems and Translations of Robert Fletcher (1970) and The Ellesmere Chaucer: Essays in Interpretation (1995).
