SYRETT, David 1939-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born January 8, 1939, in White Plains, NY; died October 18, 2004, in Leonia, NJ. Historian, educator, and author. Syrett was a military historian and professor at Queens College of the University of New York. Struggling successfully to overcome dyslexia, he graduated from Columbia University with a master's degree in 1964, then completed his doctorate at University College London in 1966. That year, he joined the faculty at Queens College as an assistant professor, rising to the post of full professor of history in 1980 and Distinguished Professor in 2000. As a researcher, Syrett was a well-known expert on eighteenth-century naval history, with an additional expertise on World War II's Battle of the Atlantic and the intelligence efforts at code breaking during this period. Among his publications are The Siege and Capture of Havana, 1762 (1970), The Royal Nave in American Waters, 1775-1783 (1989), and The Defeat of the German U-Boats: The Battle of the Atlantic (1994).
