Sunstein was best known for her biographies of Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. She graduated from Vassar College in 1944 with a B.A. in art history. During the 1960s, she was active in political and civic organizations. Sunstein chaired the Philadelphia chapter of the Americans for Democratic Action in the mid-1960s, and she was chair of the American Jewish Committee's Philadelphia chapter from 1964 to 1966; she also served as the committee's national secretary from 1973 to 1975. Sunstein published A Different Face: The Life of Mary Wollstonecraft in 1975 and Mary Shelley: Romance and Reality in 1989. The latter won the Prize for Independent Scholars from the Modern Language Association.
