SIDELIGHTS: Shannon Fujimoto Nakaya is a veterinarian who practices in Massachusetts and Hawaii and lives with a variety of animal companions, including birds, tortoises, goats, and a dog. In Kindred Spirit, Kindred Care: Making Health Decisions on Behalf of Our Animal Companions she addresses a number of subjects, including euthanasia. On her home page, she writes that the book "is about making customized choices on behalf of our animal companions as more than living commodities. It is about acknowledging, understanding, and respecting our animal companions as sentient beings with individual wants, needs, and opinions. It is about making choices and supporting our special animal companions according to their interests as we would want them to support us if our roles were reversed." Library Journal contributor Deborah Emerson commented that "although her book does not pretend to give all the answers, it certainly provides the right questions to ask." Nakaya focuses on smaller pets, but her advice can be applied to larger animals as well.

Kindred Spirit, Kindred Care was called "a necessary and noble guide" by Carol Haggas in Booklist. In a review for the Seattle Times, Ranny Green praised Nakaya's "poignant, careful presentation, infused with spirit and confidence."
