Born May 25, 1928, in Gainesville, GA; son of David Reynolds (an accountant) and Kate (a homemaker and teacher) Lide; married Mary Lomer, November 5, 1955 (marriage ended December 12, 1988); married Bettijoyce Breen (a government program manager), December 17, 1988; children: David Alston, Vanessa Lide Whitcomb, James Hugh, Quention Robert.
