SIDELIGHTS: Ron Hog an studied film while at university and found work in a bookstore after graduating. While there he decided to interview the many authors who visited on their book tours. The interviews were subsequently posted on the Internet on a literary Web site he created called Beatrice. This caught the attention of Random House, who set up interviews with their authors on Beatrice. Nearly a decade after its start, Hogan's Web site is read by over 100,000 people each month.

When Hogan started writing The Stewardess Is Flying the Plane! American Films of the 1970s, he was able to use guest writers to occasionally take over his role with Beatrice. This allowed him to go back to his academic roots to produce a book about films from Hollywood in the 1970s. The book covers numerous genres and includes an interview with iconic director Peter Bogdanovich. More than 400 films are cited in this book, with information ranging from oddities of how the film was made to box-office results. Reviews of The Stewardess Is Flying the Plane! were mostly positive. For some critics, the photos included on the various films and actors were considered enough to make this a good book. John Brodie, writing in Vanity Fair, commented that the book "should be required reading for directors." In regard to the actual writing, a reviewer in Publishers Weekly wrote: "The text is engrossing and written with verve."
