Unger, Gerhard

Unger, Gerhard, German tenor; b. Bad Salzungen, Nov. 26, 1916. He received training in Eisenach and at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. After beginning his career as a concert artist, he joined the Weimar Opera in 1947. From 1949 to 1961 he was a member of the (East) Berlin State Opera. He also appeared as David at the Bayreuth Festivals (1951-52). From 1961 to 1963 he sang in Stuttgart, and in 1962 appeared as Pedrillo at the Salzburg Festival. He then was a member of the Hamburg State Opera (1963-66) and the Vienna State Opera (1966-70). In later years, he became particularly es teemed for his character roles. His last major appearance was as Mime in Stuttgart in 1987. As a concert artist, his repertoire ranged from the Baroque era to contemporary scores.
