Symphony in 3 Movements. Orch. work by Stravinsky comp. 1942–5 and f.p. NYPO cond. Stravinsky 1946. F. Eng. p. 1946, cond. Ansermet (broadcast). Work's genesis is of special interest; 1st movt. began, in 1942, as pf. conc. or conc. for orch. with concertante pf. part, inspired by film on China's ‘scorched earth’ tactics. 2nd movt. was written as acc. for apparition of Virgin Mary in film Song of Bernadette, an abortive project where Stravinsky was concerned. 3rd movt. influenced by wartime newsreels.
