Symphony of a Thousand
Symphony of a Thousand. Nickname, not wholly approved by the composer, for Mahler's Sym. No.8 in E♭ major, comp. 1906–7, f.p. Munich 1910 (cond. Mahler), because of the huge forces employed to perf. it. It is, however, not necessary to use 1,000 people, although at the f.p. more than that number were on the platform. F. Eng. p. London 1930 (Wood).
