Steinitz, (Charles) Paul (Joseph)

Steinitz, (Charles) Paul (Joseph), English organist and conductor; b. Chichester, Aug. 25, 1909; d. Oxted, April 22, 1988. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and also privately with George Oldroyd. He then served as church organist in Ashford, Kent (1933–42). In 1947 he organized the South London Bach Soc; this choral group later became noteworthy under the name of the London Bach Soc. He also served as organist and choirmaster at the Church of St. Bartholomew-the-Great in London (1949–61). In 1969 he founded the Steinitz Bach Players, which he conducted on tours. In 1945 he became a prof. at the Royal Academy of Music in London; also taught at Goldsmiths’ Coll., Univ. of London (1948–76). He pubi. Bach’s Passions (London, 1979). In 1985 he was made a member of the Order of the British Empire.
