Stein, Peter

Stein, Peter, German opera and theater producer; b. Berlin, Oct. 1, 1937. He was educated in Frankfurt am Main and in Munich. In 1964 he joined the staff of the Munich Kammerspiele. In 1970 he co-founded the Schaubühne in Berlin, and subsequently was its artistic director until 1985. He produced his first opera, Das Rheingold, in Paris in 1976. In 1986 he staged Otello at the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, and returned there to produce Falstaff in 1988 and Pelléas et Mélisande in 1992. From 1992 to 1997 he was director of drama at the Salzburg Festival, where his production of Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron was mounted in 1996.
