Škroup, Jan Nepomuk

Škroup, Jan Nepomuk , Bohemian conductor, teacher, and composer, brother of František Jan Škroup; b. Osice, near Pardubice, Sept. 15, 1811; d. Prague, May 5, 1892. He studied at the Prague Gymnasium, then conducted various orch. concerts and theater productions and served as choirmaster in churches and monasteries in Prague; was choirmaster at St. Vitus Cathedral (1848–87). He wrote the operas Svédové v Praze (The Swedish Girl in Prague; 1844), Der Liebesring (1860), and Vineta (1861); also incidental music, choral works, partsongs, and songs.
