Schneider, Max
Schneider, Max, eminent German musicologist; b. Eisleben, July 20, 1875; d. Halle, May 5, 1967. He studied musicology at the Univ. of Leipzig with Riemann and Kretzschmar, and harmony and composition with Jadassohn. He continued his musicological training at the Univ. of Berlin (Ph.D., 1917), where he was a librarian (1904–07), then was asst. librarian at the Royal Library (1907–14). He conducted in Halle (1897–1901), and also taught at the Church Music Inst. in Berlin; then was a prof. at the univs. of Breslau (1915–28) and Halle (1928–60). He pubi. Beiträge zu einer Anleitung Clavichord und Cembalo zu spielen (Strasbourg, 1934) and Beiträge zur Musikforschung (vol. I, Halle, 1935). He did useful work in compiling miscellaneous bio-bibliographical materials in music; ed. numerous important bibliographical surveys; also ed. the works of Heinrich Schutz. He enjoyed a well-merited reputation in Germany as a thorough scholar. He was honored 3 times by Festschrifts: H. Zingel, ed., Festschrift Max Schneider zum 60. Geburtstag (Halle, 1935), W.
