Schlegel, Leander

Schlegel, Leander, Dutch pianist, teacher, and composer; b. Oegstgeest, near Leiden, Feb. 2, 1844; d. Overveen, near Haarlem, Oct. 20, 1913. He studied at the royal music school in The Hague, then went to Leipzig, where he was a student of Reinecke. After touring with Wilhelm] as his accompanist, he returned to the Netherlands, where he was director of the music school in Haarlem (1870–98); in 1898 he moved to Overveen, where he continued to teach. He was a composer of solid attainments; in his music he tried to emulate Brahms. He wrote a Sym., a Violin Concerto, a Piano Quartet, a String Quartet, a number of piano pieces in a Romantic mood, and many melodious songs.
