Ries, Franz (Anton)
Ries, Franz (Anton) , German violinist, father of Ferdinand Ries and (Pieter) Hubert Ries; b. Bonn, Nov. 10, 1755; d. Godesberg, Nov. 1, 1846. He studied violin as a child with J.P. Salomon, and entered the Court Orch. when he was 11. After successful appearances in Vienna as a soloist and chamber music player in 1779, he was given a court appointment by the Elector Maximilian in Bonn that same year; was also active as a teacher, Beethoven being one of his students. Ries lost his court position when the French dissolved the electoral court in 1794, and thereafter eked out a living mainly by teaching.
