Reed, William Henry , English violinist and composer; b. Frome, July 29, 1876; d. Dumfries, July 2, 1942. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was a violinist in the London Sym. Orch. at its foundation in 1904, later serving as its concertmaster (1912–35). He taught violin at the Royal Coll. of Music in London. He was a close friend of Elgar, and publ. Elgar as I Knew Him (London, 1936) and Elgar (London, 1939). His works include the orch. sketches The Lincoln Imp (Hereford Festival, 1921) and Aesop’s Fables (Hereford Festival, 1924), a Violin Concerto, Rhapsody for Violin and Orch., 5 string quartets, violin pieces, songs, etc.
