Pozo, Chino (Francisco)

Pozo, Chino (Francisco) , Latin-jazz percussionist; cousin of Chano Pozo; b. Oct. 4, 1915, Havana, Cuba; d. N.Y., April 28, 1980. He taught himself to play piano and double bass. After moving to the U.S. in 1937, he worked with Machito (1941–43) and accompanied a dance troupe (1943–9). In 1948, he performed and recorded with Tadd Dameron and Fats Navarro. While working in various Latin groups, he recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Machito, and Charlie Parker (1950). Thereafter, he toured with Peggy Lee (1954–55), performed with Stan Kenton (1955) and Herbie Mann (1956), and recorded with Illinois Jacquet (1954), Phineas Newborn (1957), Billy Taylor (1959), and Gibor Szabo (1965). Starting in the mid-1960s, he worked as percussionist for singer Paul Anka.
