Nolte, Ewald V(alentin)

Nolte, Ewald V(alentin), American organist, choirmaster, teacher, and composer; b. Utica, Nebr., Sept. 21, 1909; d. Winston-Salem, N.C, March 31, 1991. He studied at Concórdia Teachers Coll. in Seward, Nebr. (certificate, 1929) and later was a student of Albert Noelte at Northwestern Univ. in Evanston, 111. (M.Mus., 1945; Ph.D., 1954, with the diss. The Instrumental Works of Johann Pachelbel). He also studied with Hindemith and Schrade at Yale Univ. (1950–51). From 1929 to 1944 he was a Lutheran church organist and choirmaster in 111. and Ohio. He was an asst. prof. of music at Northwestern Univ. from 1944 to 1964, and then was a prof. of music at Salem Coll. in Winston-Salem from 1964 to 1980. From 1964 to 1972 he also was executive director of the Moravian Music Foundation and ed. numerous works in its archive. He composed sacred choral music, supplied accompaniments to hymns, and arranged American folk songs.
