Nicholls, Agnes (b Cheltenham, 1877; d London, 1959). Eng. soprano. Opera début London 1895 as Purcell's Dido. CG 1901–24. Sang with Denhof, Beecham, and BNOC cos. Amer. début Cincinnati Fest. 1904. Sang Sieglinde in Die Walküre and Brünnhilde in Siegfried in first Eng. Ring at CG in 1908 cond. Richter. Successful career in oratorio, singing in f.p. of Elgar works. Wife of cond. Sir Hamilton Harty. Works were written for her by Parry and Harty. CBE 1923.
