Nicholls, Rhoda Holmes (1854–1930)

English-born watercolor painter. Born Rhoda Carleton Marion Holmes in Coventry, England, on March 28, 1854; died in Stamford, Connecticut, on September 7, 1930; daughter of a vicar; studied in London at the Bloomsbury School of Art; studied in Rome as a member of the Circello Artistico; married Burr H. Nicholls (an American painter), in 1884.

Rhoda Nicholls was born in 1854 in Coventry, England, the daughter of a vicar. After her marriage to American painter Burr H. Nicholls, she moved to America in 1884 and settled in New York City. Her Venetian watercolors and her illustrations for William Dean Howells' Venetian Life are representative of her brilliant and individual style. Four of her paintings are in the Boston Art Club and two in the Boston Museum. Nicholls' work received the tribute of various medals and awards at exhibitions in New York and elsewhere. For many years, she taught art classes at the William Chase School in Shinnecock, Long Island; she also taught at the Art Students League in New York City.
