Moravec, Ivan
Moravec, Ivan, distinguished Czech pianist and pedagogue; b. Prague, Nov. 9, 1930. He studied with Grünfeld at the Prague Cons, (graduated, 1948), and after further training with Štěpánova-Kurzova in Prague (1952–53), he attended Michelangeli’s master classes in Arezzo (1957, 1958). He made his debut with the Prague Radio (1946), and later toured in Europe, making his London debut in 1959. He first appeared in the U.S. as soloist with the Cleveland Orch. in N.Y. (Jan. 30, 1964). He taught at the Prague Academy of Music (from 1967), where he headed its master class in piano (from 1969). Moravec is particularly noted for his performances of the standard 19th- and 20th-century repertoires.
