Marpurg, Friedrich Wilhelm

Marpurg, Friedrich Wilhelm, German music theorist and composer, great-grandfather of Friedrich Marpurg ; b. Seehof bei Seehausen, Brandenburg, Nov. 21, 1718; d. Berlin, May 22, 1795. While secretary to Generallieutenant Friedrich Rudolph Graf von Rothenburg in Paris (1746–49), he became acquainted with Rameau and his theories. After a short stay in Berlin and a prolonged sojourn in Hamburg, he joined the Prussian lottery at Berlin (1763), and was its director from 1766 until his death. In addition to editing collections of songs and keyboard works, he also composed sonatas, other pieces for keyboard, and songs.
