Marcel (real name, Wasself), Lucille

Marcel (real name, Wasself), Lucille, American soprano; b. N.Y., 1885; d. Vienna, June 22,1921. She studied in N.Y, Berlin, and with }. de Reszke in Paris, where she made her debut as Mallika in Lakmé at the Opéra-Comique (1903). After marrying Felix Weingart-ner in 1907, she sang the title role in Elektra at its first Viennese staging under his direction (March 24, 1908); continued to sing at the Court Opera until 1911, then was a member of the Hamburg Opera (1912–14). She made her U.S. debut as Tosca with the Boston Opera Co. (Feb. 14, 1912), and remained on its roster until 1914. After a period in Darmstadt, she settled in Vienna. Her other roles included Eva, Marguerite, Desdemona, and Aida.
