Marc, Alessandra, accomplished American soprano; b. Berlin, July 29,1957. She received her training at the Univ. of Md. In 1987 she made her operatic debut in Giordano’s La Cene delle Beffe at the Wexford Festival in England. In 1988 she sang Maria in Strauss’s Friedenstag at the Santa Fe Opera. During the 1988–89 season, she appeared as Leonora in La Forza del Destino at the Greater Miami Opera, as Madame Lidoine in Les Dialogues des Carmélites at the Houston Grand Opera, as Strauss’s Ariadne at the Washington (D.C.) Concert Opera, and as Aida at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. On Oct. 14, 1989, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Aida. In 1992 she sang for the first time at the Philadelphia Opera as Turandot, a role she reprised at the Macerata Festival in 1996. During the 1992–93 season, she made her debut at the Berlin State Opera as Strauss’s Ariadne. In 1993 she made her Italian operatic debut at the Rome Opera as Aida. During the 1994–95 season, she appeared for the first time at London’s Covent Garden as Turandot. Her other opera engagements included the Vienna State Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Cologne Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and the Hamburg State Opera. Among her other prominent roles are Norma, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, and Chrysothemis in Elektra.As a concert artist, she has appeared with many of the finest orchs. and festivals in a repertoire ranging from classical standards to Samuel Barber.
