Löhner, Johann

Löhner, Johann, German organist, tenor, and composer; b. Nuremberg (baptized), Nov. 21,1645; d. there, April 2, 1705. After the death of his parents, he was adopted by his brother-in-law, G.C. Wecker, who made it possible for him to study music. He was active in Nuremberg as an organist and tenor in various churches, where he was made organist of the Spitalkirche in 1682 and then of St. Lorenz in 1694. He composed over 300 songs for devotional use in the home, the most important of which are found in his collection Auserlesene Kirch-und Tafel-Musik for Voice, 2 Violins, and Basso Continuo (Nuremberg, 1682). Löhner also composed 3 operas, but only 2 collections of arias are extant.
