Lloyd, A(lbert) L(ancaster)

Lloyd, A(lbert) L(ancaster), English ethnomusicologist; b. London, Feb. 29, 1908; d. Greenwich, Sept. 29, 1982. He became interested in folk-song research while working on an Australian sheep farm (1926–35). His interest was furthered by his commitment to Socialism. In 1937–38 he collected whaling songs while working as a whaling fisherman in the Antarctic, and then traveled in South America and the Middle East. From 1950 he concentrated his research in southeastern Europe. He gave lectures in England and the U.S., and produced radio programs and documentary films. In his research, he placed special importance upon socioeconomic factors.
