Lipton, Martha

Lipton, Martha, American mezzo-soprano and teacher; b. N.Y., April 6, 1913. She was educated at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. On Nov. 27, 1944, she made her debut as Siebel with the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. and remained on its roster until 1960; also sang with the N.Y.C. Opera (1944, 1958, 1961) and at the Chicago Lyric Opera (1956). In Europe she sang in Amsterdam and The Hague, and at the Holland and Edinburgh festivals, the Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opéra; also made appearances in South America. In 1960 she became a prof. of voice at the Ind. Univ. School of Music in Bloomington. Among her prominent roles were Cherubino, Ulrica, Orlovsky, Herodias, and Octavian. She also appeared extensively as a concert artist.
