Lhérie (real name, Lévy), Paul

Lhérie (real name, Lévy), Paul, French tenor, later baritone; b. Paris, Oct. 8, 1844; d. there, Oct. 17, 1937. He was a pupil of Obin in Paris. In 1866 he made his operatic debut in the tenor role of Reuben in Joseph at the Paris Opéra- Comique, where he sang until 1868 and again from 1872. On March 3, 1875, he created the role of Don José there. In 1882 he turned to baritone roles, and in 1884 he appeared as Posa in the rev. version of Don Carlos at Milan’s La Scala. In 1887 he sang Rigoletto at London’s Covent Garden, returning there as Luna and Germont. Following his retirement from the stage in 1894, he was active as a voice teacher in Paris.
