Ed., Musical Quarterly 1945–73. Author of several books incl. Music in Western Civilisation (NY, 1941), George Frideric Handel (NY 1966), Critic at the Opera (NY 1971), and the anthologies The Concerto 1800–1900 (NY 1969) and The Symphony 1800–1900 (NY 1969).
