Lang, Johann Georg

Lang, Johann Georg, Bohemian-born German composer; b. Svojsin, 1722; d. Ehrenbreitstein, July 17, 1798. He received training in violin and keyboard playing. After playing in the orch. of the Prince-Bishop of Augsburg (1746–49), he studied counterpoint with Durante and Abos in Naples. About 1758 he was made Konzertmeister by his Augsburg patron, continuing in that post when the orch. was moved to Ehrenbreitstein in 1769. He retired in 1794. Lang composed 38 syms. and 29 harpsichord concertos. His expertise as an instrumental composer led to the misattribution of some of his works to Haydn, J. Stamitz, and J.C. Bach. Among his other works were masses, litanies, Te Deums, ensemble sonatas with keyboard obbligato, and quartets with flute obbligato.
