Klengel, Julius

Klengel, Julius, German cellist, pedagogue, and composer, brother of Paul Klengel; b. Leipzig, Sept. 24, 1859; d. there, Oct. 27, 1933. Brought up in a musical atmosphere (virtually all members of his family were professional or amateur musicians), he developed rapidly, studying cello with Emil Hegar and theory with Jadassohn. He joined the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orch. when he was 15, and in 1881 became 1st cellist, remaining in that post until his resignation in 1924. He was Royal Prof, at the Leipzig Cons, (from 1881), numbering among his most distinguished students Suggia, Feuermann, and Piatigorsky. He composed 4 cello concertos and other works for cello, chamber music, etc.
