Khokhlov, Pavel (Akinfievich)

Khokhlov, Pavel (Akinfievich), noted Russian baritone; b. Spassky, Aug. 2, 1854; d. Moscow, Sept. 20, 1919. He studied in Moscow, making his debut with the Bolshoi Theater there as Valentin in Faust (March 3, 1879); remained on its roster until he retired in 1900, and also appeared at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg (1881; 1887-88). He sang the title role in Eugene Onegin at its first professional performance (Moscow, Jan. 23, 1881). His other outstanding roles included Rubinstein’s Demon, Boris Godunov, Prince Igor, Don Giovanni, and Wolfram.
