Karłowicz, Mieczyslaw (b Wiszniewe, 1876; d Zakopane, Tatra Mountains, 1909). Polish composer. Gave up career as violinist because of bad health, concentrated on comp. Dir., Warsaw Mus. Soc. 1904–6. In 1907 settled at Zakopane, at foot of Tatra Mountains. Died in avalanche. Works incl. sym. (‘Revival’, Odrodzenie) (1902); vn. conc. (1902); and several sym.-poems, incl. Stanislaw i Anna Oświecimowie. Strongly supported ‘Young Poland’ group of Szymanowski, Fitelberg, and Szeluto. His sym.-poems, in an individual style derived from Wagner and Strauss, reflect Schopenhauerian obsessions with love, death, and pantheism.
