Judd, James, English conductor; b. Hertford, Oct. 30, 1949. He studied piano with Alfred Kitchin and conducting with Bernard Keefe at Trinity Coll. of Music in London(1967-71), then was active with the London Opera Centre. He subsequently was asst. conductor of the Cleveland Orch. (1973–75). He was co-founder and conductor of the Chamber Orch. of Europe in 1981, with which he toured in the U.S. in 1984-85. He also appeared widely as a guest conductor in England, on the Continent, and in the U.S. In 1987 he became music director of the Phil. Orch. of Fla. in Fort Lauderdale. He also was artistic director of the Greater Miami Opera (1993–98) and music director of the New Zealand Sym. Orch. in Wellington (from 1999).
