Jones, (Dame) Gwyneth (b Pontnewynydd, 1936). Welsh soprano. Début Zurich 1962 (Gluck's Orpheus). Sang Lady Macbeth (1963) and Leonore in Fidelio (1964) for WNO. Member of Royal Opera, CG, from 1963. Frequent guest appearances at Vienna Opera from 1966, Rome, Munich, Milan, S. Francisco, Chicago. NY début 1966, NY Met 1972; Bayreuth début 1966 and sang Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen at centenary Bayreuth Fest. 1976, and at S. Francisco 1990, CG 1991, and NY Met 1993. Salzburg Fest. 1979. CBE 1976. DBE 1986. Shakespeare Prize 1987.
