Hobson, Ian
Hobson, Ian, English pianist, conductor, and teacher; b. Wolverhampton, Aug. 7, 1952. He studied piano and organ at the Royal Academy of Music in London, then pursued academic studies at Magdalene Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1972). He subsequently studied piano with Claude Frank and harpsichord with Ralph Kirkpatrick at Yale Univ. (D.M.A., 1978). He made his London debut in 1979. In 1981 he won 1st prize in the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition. He made his U.S. debut in N.Y. in 1983. He has appeared as soloist with major orchs. of Europe and North America. In 1975 he joined the faculty of the Univ. of 111.
