Hlobil, Emil

Hlobil, Emil, Czech composer and teacher; b. Veseli nad Luznici, Oct. 11, 1901; d. Prague, Jan. 25, 1987. He studied with Kricka at the Prague Cons. (1920–23) and in the master classes of Suk there (1924-25; 1927-30). After teaching at the Prague Women Teachers’ Inst. (1930–41), he taught at the Cons. (1941–58) and afterward at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Prague. He was made an Artist of Merit (1972) and a National Artist (1981) for his services to Czech music. He followed the national tradition of the modern Czech school, and also cautiously experimented with serial methods of composition.
