Hèle, George de la

Hèle, George de la, Flemish composer; b. Antwerp, 1547; d. Madrid, Aug. 27, 1586. He studied with Antoine Barbé at Notre Dame Cathedral in Antwerp before serving as a choirboy in the chapel of Philip II in Madrid; he also studied at the univs. of Alcalâ and Louvain. In 1572 he became choirmaster at St. Rombaut, and then at Tournai Cathedral about 1574. In 1580 he was made master of the royal chapel in Madrid by Philip II. His most important collection was Octo missae quinqkue, sex et septem vocum (Antwerp, 1578). L. Wagner ed. it, along with his other extant works, in Corpus Mensurabilis Musicae, LVI (1972).
